Curcuma zedoaria (Christm.) Rosc. (also known as C. zerumbet Roxb.) from the Zingiberaceae family is an aromatic perennial herb found mainly in East Asian countries like China, India, Japan, and Vietnam. Traditionally, its rhizome is used in Asian medicine to treat a variety of ailments such as stomach disorders, toothaches, blood stagnation, leucoderma, tuberculosis, spleen enlargement, and to promote menstruation. It is also known for its antiallergic and antitumoral properties and has been reported to have lipopolysaccharide inhibitory effects.
 
 
Cultivated in India, Ceylon, and China for its starch-rich tubers, which are commercially known as zedoary root, this plant is used to produce 'Shoti Starch,' a substitute for arrowroot and barley. Zedoary is also utilized in the production of liquors, stomach tonics, bitters, and is an ingredient in perfumes and cosmetics.
The chemical composition of essential oils from the rhizomes of Curcuma zedoaria, native to various phytogeographical regions, has been documented. However, there is limited information on the oil composition of this species from India. As part of a research initiative focused on exploring aromatic plants from Assam, we conducted an investigation into the oil from the rhizome of Curcuma zedoaria.
